Kuala Lumpur, May 14, 2025 — Malaysia’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are stepping confidently into the global arena, boosted by a wave of digital trade platforms and export support systems backed by the government and key industry players.

At the heart of this transformation is TradeTech Malaysia, a national initiative under MyDIGITAL and powered by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). The initiative provides SMEs access to e-invoicing, digital customs clearance, and smart logistics integration—all via a centralized online platform.

“We’re moving beyond digital adoption—we are now creating globally connected Malaysian businesses,” said MDEC’s Chief Strategy Officer, Lim Nadhirah.

Going Global, Digitally

With over 98% of businesses in Malaysia classified as SMEs, the potential for cross-border digital trade is massive. The government’s recently launched Cross-Border SME Booster includes export grants, compliance training, and matchmaking with regional buyers, especially within ASEAN and the Middle East.

Platforms such as SMEXchange Hub and ASEANLinkPro are now live, allowing verified Malaysian SMEs to onboard, list products, access digital warehousing, and handle payments in multiple currencies.

“Malaysian products—from halal beauty items to agro-tech solutions—are in high demand. Our role is to bridge the tech and trade gap,” said Datuk Faridah Zain, Chair of the SME Internationalisation Council.

Impact and Outlook

Already, over 3,000 SMEs have enrolled in digital trade readiness programs since January, and early data shows a 15% month-over-month increase in online export activity from Malaysian businesses.

As Malaysia prepares to chair the ASEAN Digital Trade Roundtable in Q3 2025, stakeholders say the country is positioned to lead the regional conversation on inclusive, tech-powered trade.

“Digital trade isn’t the future—it’s now. And Malaysia’s SMEs are ready,” noted Norazmi Rahman, CEO of HalalTradeLink Asia.
